what is lip blush?

Lip blush tattooing is a 'semi-permanent' cosmetic procedure that enhances the natural color and shape of the lips, giving them a fuller and more youthful appearance. This technique involves using a fine needle to deposit pigment into the upper layer of the lips, creating a soft and natural tint or a more defined lipstick affect. Unlike traditional tattoos, the pigments used in lip blush tattooing are designed to fade gradually over time, typically lasting one to three years depending on skin type, lifestyle, and aftercare.

The process begins with a consultation to determine the desired color and shape, tailored to the clients wants and needs, complement the client’s skin tone and lip shape and realistic approach to final heal. A topical anesthetic is then applied to minimise discomfort during the procedure. We then pre draw the outline of the new lip shape whilst ensuring to stay within the lip natural (vermilion) border, once client and myself are happy with the draw we set this in place and begin! I meticulously apply the pigment, building up layers to achieve the desired intensity and saturation this differs on how many passes are needed per client. The result is a subtle enhancement that can mimic the look of a natural lip tint, correcting asymmetry and adding definition to the lip line or a full lipstick affect.

Lip blush tattooing is an ideal solution for those looking to enhance their natural lip color or reduce the need for daily makeup application. It can also be used to cover scars, correct uneven pigmentation, or restore color to lips that have lost their vibrancy with age or even with Lip Filler (lip filer and lip blush are the perfect duo!). After the procedure, some swelling and tenderness are normal, and a healing process of about one week is expected (takes 4 weeks under the skin for final colour to resurface & is a two part treatment). Proper aftercare is essential to ensure optimal results and longevity, including avoiding certain activities and applying recommended balms to keep the lips moisturised and protected. (see below for all pre/aftercare).

Pre-Care

Prior to you lip blush procedure think about the look that you wish to achieve. As experts in the field of colour analysis, we ensure that the correct colours and style are chosen for you, however you are apart of the decision- making process. Permanent Make-up procedures require multiple application sessions, to achieve the best results you will be required to return for at least one control procedure between 4-8 weeks after the initial treatment. Be prepared for the colour intensity to be significantly sharper and darker immediately after treatment. This will subside and become softer as the skin heals, this process can take up to 14 days with healing still continuing up to 4 weeks where resurfacing of the colour will be complete.

GENERAL ADVICE:

  1. Hydrate and Exfoliate: Begin hydrating and exfoliating your lips a few days before the procedure to ensure they are soft and smooth. You can use a gentle lip scrub and follow it up with a nourishing lip balm.

  2. Avoid Blood Thinners: Refrain from consuming alcohol, caffeine, aspirin, ibuprofen, and other blood-thinning medications or supplements (like fish oil and vitamin E) at least 48 hours before your appointment. These can increase bleeding and swelling during the procedure also affecting the final healed results.

  3. Prevent Cold Sores: If you are prone to cold sores or herpes simplex outbreaks, start taking antiviral medication (such as Zovirax) 48 hours before your appointment and continue for the next few days to help reduce the risk of an outbreak. Lip blush does not cause cold sores, however if you carry the virus it stays within your nervous system and can be triggered by trauma to the area. Please always seek professional advice if unsure.

  4. Stay Away from Lip Fillers: Avoid getting lip fillers at least 4 weeks before your lip blush appointment. The lips need time to settle before undergoing another procedure.

  5. No Chemical Exfoliants or Laser Treatments: Do not use any chemical exfoliants (like AHAs or Retin-A) or undergo laser treatments around the lip area for at least two weeks before the procedure. These can make the skin more sensitive and prone to irritation.

  6. If you have old Permanent make-up even if not as visible anymore, you must send a photo of this over/ come in for a consultation before booking an appointment.

Contra-indications

1. Active Infections or Cold Sores: If you have an active cold sore or any lip infection, you should reschedule your appointment until it is fully healed.

2. Pregnancy or Breastfeeding: It is generally not recommended to undergo lip blush tattooing while pregnant or breastfeeding due to the sensitivity of this period and potential risk to the baby.

3. Blood Disorders or Clotting Issues: Individuals with bleeding disorders or those who are on blood thinners may not be ideal candidates, as these conditions can increase bleeding and affect the healing process.

4. Certain Medications: Those on medications that compromise the immune system or affect healing (like chemotherapy drugs or steroids) should avoid the procedure. Always consult with a healthcare provider beforehand.

5. Allergies to Pigments or Anesthetics: If you have a known allergy to tattoo pigments or topical anesthetics, lip blush tattooing may not be safe for you.

Always consult with a us/GP to ensure you’re a suitable candidate for the procedure and to discuss any specific health concerns or questions you may have.

After-Care

Please follow these steps to ensure you lip blush heals correctly, you will be given an aftercare kit with printed directions and balm to apply.

  1. After the procedure, gently blot your lips with a clean tissue to absorb any excess lymphatic fluid or blood. Do this every 30 minutes for the first few hours to prevent scabbing.

  2. Strictly No's for 7 days: soaking lips (be careful when doing you usual face washing/showers) , no exercise, smoking/vaping minimal (we don't want puckering of the lips), no spicy foods, be careful with kissing, no swimming, no sunbeds (14 days), no saunas, no applying anything other than the balm to the lips, no facial procedures around the lip area including fillers and waxing.

  3. The day after treatment you will gently wash the lip area with baby soap, blot dry with kitchen roll and apply a thin layer of balm. You will repeat this process daily and applying the balm in thin layers 2-3 times per day to ensure hydration to the lip area.

  4. Do not bite, pick, pull at the lips this will affect the heal.

You will need to come back for your second treatment 4-8 weeks after initial treatment, this is a control procedure and clients must come in even if they heal perfect so the artist can determine the next steps on the lip blush journey and longevity wise for the client its a must.
